The Zanes were bronze statues of Zeus, erected with the fines imposed on athletes who cheated. Inscriptions on the sixteen surviving plinths name the athlete and the nature of the offence for which he was condemned. The location of the Zanes along the entrance to the Stadium was a warning to all competitors
